wingtip to wingtip string test
check of wing alignment: 2014-10-31
Lumix DMC-FT1
A piece of string stretched between the wingtips to check that there is no sweep-back or sweep-forward in the wings. The string is taped down to align with the top skin joint at the port wingtip, and is taped down 32mm forward of the top skin joint on the starboard wing (because of the stagger between the spars). It's not very obvious in the picture, but the piece of paper taped near the starboard wing root has a line marked on it 32mm forward of the skin joint. The string aligns with that mark, and with the port skin joint along its length, confirming that the wings are parallel. The wing clamps on the rigging dollies have been opened to allow the string to pass. The wooden laths clamped to the TEs of the flaps are acting as counterweights to ensure that the flaps stay retracted.
