Rudder foam core: 2000 05.
Canon AV-1, Kodak Royal Gold 200.
The rudder core ready for the first layup, with peel-ply in place at TE and hinge flange, root & tip rounded, and lines drawn at 30 degrees to the LE to help with correct alignment of the UNI fibres.
Cutting UNI to size for rudder: 2000 05 25.
Canon AV-1, Kodak Royal Gold 200.
I tried to stabilise the edges of the UNI by sticking masking tape all around. It did stop it unravelling, but because it was time-consuming, wasted glasscloth, and made it difficult to deal with corners, I fairly soon abandoned this practice. Marking a single fibre with a felt-tip pen took almost as long as taping the edges, but it was a very worthwhile job.
First rudder layup completed: 2000 05 26.
Canon AV-1, Kodak Royal Gold 200.
The slightly heavier black lines are the highlighted threads in the 2 layers of UNI, showing that I managed to keep the weave reasonably straight, and parallel to the guide lines drawn on the foam.
