making a dummy pitot-static mast

making a dummy pitot-static mast: 2008-02-15.

Nikon Coolpix 8400

On the right is a piece of aluminium plate, the waste from cutting an instrument hole with a holesaw. Using a smaller 46mm holesaw on a similar piece produced the annulus on the left (for which I have yet to find a use!), and the centre "waste" piece was used to make the baseplate for the dummy pitot-static mast, shown after turning to size and drilling.

Underside of wing showing dummy mast installed, with no protruding bits to get broken off. Note the button-head hex socket screws, which are shorter than the ones that will be used to finally install the real pitot-static mast, so that the stiff part of the anchor-nuts does not get worn out un-necessarily. One of the black felt-tip lines is definitely at right-angles to the spar, and that was the one used to line up the pitot head!

Dummy pitot-static mast unscrewed showing plenty of slack in the tubing to allow installation of the real mast without having to poke around inside the wing. The access panel in the background allows the inside of the wing to be reached if that becomes necessary.
