1958 panorama thumbnail
This panoramic picture of the whole school was taken by Buchanan of Portslade, Sussex in September 1958. You will see that my print has suffered some deterioration in storage since then. A few years ago I contacted the photographic firm to see if I could get a fresh print, but they said they had not long since destroyed all their old negatives because they couldn't afford the space to keep them. I'm sorry that they didn't wait just a bit longer until digital storage got really cheap and have them all scanned. They're probably sorry too as I'm sure they could have had a profitable tie-in with Friends Reunited for instance.
I scanned the original print in 6 sections and stitched it together again using DoubleTake (Mac-only - intended for making panoramas from individual overlapping pictures, but ideal for this job too).
On the original (despite the damage), almost every face is recognisable, even several of the few who have moved during the exposure. To make the most of it, I have provided this picture in several sizes. The larger ones provide good detail, but take longer to download. The speed of your internet connexion will probably govern the largest size you choose to view, but once rendered by your browser, any of the pictures can be immediately downloaded to your own computer for viewing later offline.

To help identify people, I have produced another version of this picture with a numbered grid superimposed. This is available for download as a PDF which will print out on 7 sheets of A4 paper. Also available are similar PDFs without the grid, and a list of the names so far identified together with the grid co-ordinates of their faces.

1959 panorama thumbnail
This is the September 1959 panoramic picture by the same firm as above. Sadly, it is in even worse condition in places - some patches of the emulsion have detached.
You can see that this was posed in a different location from the previous year - the roof of the Cadet Hut and the back of the Route Hospital appear in the background near the right-hand end. (The roof at the right-hand end of the 1958 picture might be the Chemistry Lab.)

1965 panorama thumbnail
This is the September 1965 panoramic picture. The scans from which this panorama was re-created were supplied by David Neill. His work was somewhat hampered by creases on his original print.
This was posed in yet another location - the tennis / netball courts to the south-east of the main school building, the roof of which is visible just left of centre. Further right is St James Church Hall and Church, and then the black huts of the Model School (or more formally Ballymoney County Primary School) where I spent the first 5 years of my education. That school moved to new premises at the beginning of my final (11-plus) year in 1956. Not sure what the huts were used for in the interim, but I'm sure they were knocked down not long after this picture was taken (can anyone supply a date?).
