preparing for tank support layups: 2009-03-03
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Looking aft with cockpit module inverted. Almost ready to start applying the tank support layups. The forward face and underside (at the top here) of the baggage bay and tunnel have been scuff-sanded, and polyethylene sheet applied to the horizontal surfaces as temporary support for the layups until the tank is inserted. The layups on the vertical faces can really only be done before the tank is in position.
1st stage of tank support layups: 2009-03-05
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Looking aft with cockpit module inverted. The layups have been applied to the vertical faces of the baggage bay and tunnel, and temporarily folded aftwards onto the polyethylene sheet.
2nd stage of tank support layups: 2009-03-05
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Looking forward with cockpit module inverted. Tank inserted and layups folded 180 degrees forward to lie on the tank, which has polyethylene sheet applied to it to prevent the layup adhering.
forward tank support layup: 2009-03-05
Nikon Coolpix 8400
A wooden lath inserted between the tank and the seatback to keep the tank in the correct position while the tank support layup cures. Also visible at bottom centre and bottom left are the wedges used to set the tank in the correct vertical position.
3rd stage of tank support layups: 2009-03-05
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Tank support layups completed with horizontal overlays applied. The baggage bay is quite flexible, so to keep it correctly aligned during cure I used soft aluminium wire bent around convenient holes at each side of the baggage bay and seatpan.
